First of all, between the last episode and this one, I keep getting reminded of how easily Natsume Yuujinchou could have been a horror series with all the randomly appearing pots, sandals, footprints, hands and heads, if it didn't have all these moments of comedy and cute character designs. Okay, I've sung enough praises, now let's take care of some other stuff. It doesn't mean that his role is inconsequential though, as is shown with him going the extra mile to make sure that everyone ends up the happiest they can be, even if it's just a little, and that's what makes him such a lovable protagonist. He's generally not the one who set any of the important events in motion, but he does tend to be the one who sees them through to their conclusion often because of his kind-hearted nature(bless his soul since it's a miracle he didn't turn into a bitter and depressed loner after all he's been through). In this instance and in many others, he plays the supporting role in helping the youkai(whose name we never got, curiously) reunite with the person she(yes, I'm assuming gender) so strongly wished to see again. While his character growth continues even off-screen, he's not always the one at the center of the events that play out. It's hard to imagine what that would feel like but part of the brilliance of this show is being able to capture at least a part of it, and that makes for a compelling experience.Īdding on to this, as always, I really like the role Natsume plays in all of this. It's easy to see why they get hung up over it without being able to let go, especially when there's that tiny glimmer of hope that you could talk to them again, or just have them acknowledge your presence. Having a meaningful encounter with someone which sticks with you forever but is either too insignificant to the other person or simply one of the many little encounters we all have is something that could just as easily apply to any human, but it's all the more exemplified when we think in youkai terms, such as being able to meet the person you had that encounter with but never being able to be noticed, and having it continue for 50 years.

This is true for the series as a whole but I especially love episodes like this one which not only take full advantage of the setting but can also apply to normal humans as well. Tugging at my heartstrings in ways I could never even imagine. the arc takes the entire volume, with the rest of the pages being special episodes.Īhh, I'm so glad to see this series hasn't changed. Until the next episode, which seems to jump back to volume 13 and start on chapter 52, which is the beginning of a 3 chapter long arc. Sad that there aren't really any good pictures I can use as comparisons. Other than that, a spot on adaptation of the chapter.

season 4(I think 4, maybe 3), Natsume chooses to not run away from seeing his old home before they sell it, it reflects here by having him tell the youkai that an answer needs to be found, whether it's good or bad. it's important to find out." Part of me thinks that this really cements Natsume's personality and his growth over the show. Mainly, after Natsume apologizes for not having an answer about his age, he finishes with "But we'll keep looking. When the two are talking on the bench, they leave out a small bit at the end. It's not as apparent in the episode (unless I just zoned out at the time), but the switch to being really respectful to Natsume is hilarious (the youkai is calling Natsume a bastard and whatnot). The anime added in the whole Nishimura and girl scene, which is fine cause I love his reactions and luck.

This episode adapts chapter 56, which is in volume 14. I also like how this episode prods into the problems that come with Taki's magical circle to see youkai, cause it's something that never really popped up before, and it's a theme that comes up much more in the later volumes.įor those who actually care. I appreciate that we're not the only ones who find it silly. Also, that poke at the Japanese people getting sick in the rain. Still as bittersweet as I remember this show being.
